What is Intensive Outpatient Mental Treatment?

The Intensive Outpatient Mental Treatment Program (IOP) is more intensive than traditional outpatient and is designed to achieve short-term stabilization and resolution of immediate problem areas. The patient and family are offered services by a team of professionals. The patient is enrolled in a time-limited program with other patients working on similar issues. The treatment team may include licensed therapists, nurses, program specialists, and a doctor.

The Center of Revitalizing Psychiatry (Hackensack, NJ - 201-488-5161) has IOP for adult and geriatric population. The programs are offered Monday through Friday with a minimum of three hours per day. The actual schedule depends on the individual client's needs and insurance benefits.

The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) of the Center of Revitalizing Psychiatry is a short-term outpatient program designed specifically for adult and geriatric patients who are experiencing behavioral or emotional difficulties, but who do not require (or no longer require) the intense level of psychiatric care provided by inpatient or partial hospitalization programs. IOP is ideal for stabilizing those individuals with a history of frequent relapse. Eligible patients have acute symptoms of depression and/or anxiety and may be at risk for hospitalization, or may be "stepping down" from a hospital stay.

Located in a comfortable and relaxed setting, IOP provides intensive treatment among a therapeutic community of peers. Group therapies are used to promote coping skills, stress management, goal achievement and treatment compliance. (Individual therapy, family therapy, and medication management are provided, when indicated.)

Our goal is to empower each person to move to their "best" self and thereby learning new ways to cope with stress, anxiety and depression. All our groups and sessions are geared to treating the
underlying causes and help facilitate recovery. Combination of group therapy, individual therapies and closely monitored medication management has been validated by research to be one of the most effective forms of treatment mental disorders.

Advantages of IOP:

• Individual lives at home
• Sessions may be conducted while the individual continues to go to work or school
• Individual therapy is augmented by group therapies specific to the patient's needs
• Multiple professional disciplines work with the patient and family
• Frequency of attendance is determined by the individual's specific needs
• Specialty programs available

Intensive Outpatient Treatment:

• Targets stabilization
• Promotes achievement of realistic goals
• Increases compliance with treatment plan
